Any Given Sunday

Excellent start. But instead of protecting teams from over-investing in a vulnerable asset, I appreciate the salary cap for its equalizing effect. The reason why the NFL is so popular, and why I hold it in such high regard, is that "On Any Given Sunday" one team may beat another. This is because teams are unable to stack up the big name players (read NY Yankees). They must find a balance of stars, role players, and young (inexpensive) talent. This makes each season more exciting: knowing that your team has a legitimate shot.

Even the St. Louis Rams fans are excited for this season. And that says a lot.

In regards to the new Collective Bargaining Agreement being hammered out, there needs to be something done about the rookie pay scale. The amount of guaranteed money going to players who have never even stepped foot on a professional football field is staggering. Jamarcus Russell inked a $61 million contract with $32 million guaranteed before he even threw a single touchdown (which were few and far in between.) Al Davis was content to pay an absurd, lucrative amount of money to a man who spent he free time eating pancakes covered with sizzurp.

In conclusion: Jamarcus Russell is a lazy-ass thug. Al Davis is an expired waste of air. And salary caps rock.
